HARRIS TO RUN FOR RE-ELECTION TO ILLINOIS HOUSE
State Representative David Harris (R-Arlington Heights) announced today that he plans to run for re-election to the Illinois House of Representatives from the 53rd Representative District. Harris had considered a run for Congress from the newly-drawn 8th Congressional District which has no incumbent legislator and which covers part of Harris’ current district.
“Public service at any level is a privilege. I am honored to represent the citizens of this area in the Illinois House, and there is a lot of work to be done to put the State of Illinois on sound financial footing,” said Harris. “As the Republican spokesman on the House Revenue & Finance Committee, I was able to have a meaningful impact on budget issues this year. Positive progress was made on the budget, and it is important to maintain that forward momentum. I strive to provide the constituents of my district with hands-on and committed public service, and I am excited about the prospect of continuing that service if I win re-election to the Illinois House.”
“I tested the waters for a possible run for Congress from the new 8th District, and I was genuinely humbled by the expressions of support that I received from Republican officials both in and out of the District,” Harris added. “However, a decision to run for Congress involves many factors, not just an estimate of winning or losing. The ability to be close to my family and to work with leaders at the local level means a lot to me at this time in my life.”
Harris indicated that he would enthusiastically support the winner of the Republican primary in the 8th Congressional District. “At the state level, I support and have proposed policies that emphasize economic growth based on deficit reduction, less spending, and the creation of small business job opportunities in the private sector. I urge the Republican candidate for Congress in the 8th District to do the same at the federal level,” said Harris.
The 53rd State Representative district in which Harris will run is also a newly-drawn district. It encompasses most of Arlington Heights, about half of both Mount Prospect and Prospect Heights, and a small part of Des Plaines.
